Program Description

The focus of the Graduate Certificate in University Learning and Teaching (GCULT) is on the development of teaching capability in higher education (HE). The program is designed to assist both new and experienced University teachers to develop a scholarly approach to teaching. This is achieved by a balance of theory with practice; viewing learning and teaching from a range of perspectives including their own experiences, the experiences of students and of colleagues, and the educational literature. The process of reflection on these perspectives will provide a foundation for individual professional teaching development and for further exploration in higher education.

The program is designed to meet the needs of busy teachers from diverse teaching settings. Courses in the program include one or more intensive face-to-face workshops that build on relevant readings and periods of structured independent learning. Courses are designed to promote collegial collaboration, and be interactive and engaging. They are crafted to model a wide variety of good teaching practices, and involve teachers drawn from across a range of disciplines. Assessment tasks are designed to encourage participants to reflect on their teaching practice and their students’ learning and consider how this might be improved, informed by selected material from the research literature.

Participants commence the program by attending the professional development workshop, Foundations of University Learning and Teaching (FULT), and completing additional assignments for the first compulsory course in the program.
The Graduate Certificate in University Learning and Teaching is a UNSW program supported by the Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Academic) through Learning & Teaching @ UNSW and is offered by the School of Education.

Program Objectives and Learning Outcomes

The aims of the program are to:
  • Support university teachers to develop confidence and capability in scholarly teaching in higher education;
  • Build collaborative communities in learning and teaching both within and across disciplines.
Learning outcomes
By the completion of the program candidates will be able to:
  • Demonstrate an enhanced ability to engage in critically reflective teaching practice aimed at improving effectiveness;
  • Develop an investigative scholarly teaching framework underpinned by their own experiences, the experiences of students and colleagues, and the literature in higher education;
  • Use this framework to: (a) extend understanding of learning (and learning context) and to inform decisions around their teaching practice; (b) plan, develop, implement and evaluate higher education courses and programs that encourage and enhance student learning.
  • Demonstrate evidence-based approach to developing one’s teaching practice, an understanding of the higher education context and instigation of appropriate changes to one’s practice aimed at enhancing learning and teaching across the curriculum and institution.
Program Capabilities
The program will develop the following capabilities:
  • Capability to engage in discourse in learning and teaching across multiple modes
  • Capability as a reflective practitioner who is able to draw from multiple perspectives to develop understanding and practice
  • Confidence to engage as a scholarly practitioner in the field of learning and teaching
  • Capability as a change agent who Is able to influence learning and teaching beyond their immediate teaching context

Program Structure

The Graduate Certificate will be awarded after satisfactory completion of 24 units of credit. This program is only available on a part time basis and is usually taken over at least three semesters. Courses will be offered on campus in an intensive workshop format and with a mix of classroom/online and structured independent learning.

The courses have been designed to support participants to progressively develop capabilities across the program in the key areas outlined above, and each course will build coherently on work undertaken in the previous course. Based on this, all the courses are core, but crafted to ensure flexibility to allow participants to elect an area of interest and focus. In such cases the assessment is project based to allow further exploration of an elected area.

Students must complete 1) EDST5121 and 2) EDST5122 before undertaking other courses.

Academic Rules

1. A Graduate Certificate in University Learning and Teaching may be awarded by the Council to a candidate who has satisfactorily completed a program of advanced study.

Admission Requirements
2. Participants in the program are required to have completed a three year undergraduate degree at a recognized university, and all candidates are required to be actively engaged in teaching in higher education throughout the duration of the program.

Enrolment Details
3. If you are interested in enrolling in the program, please contact the program coordinators. You will then be sent UNSW application and enrolment forms, and will be provided with information about, and enrolled into, the next Foundations of University Learning and Teaching (FULT) workshop.

An alternative entry into the program for UNSW staff is to arrange to attend the FULT workshop by contacting Learning & Teaching @ UNSW at FULT@unsw.edu.au. You will then be given the appropriate application forms for the Graduate Certificate to complete during the FULT workshop.

Advanced Standing
4. Students seeking advanced standing must submit documentary evidence of courses completed at the time of initial enrolment. Faculty will then determine the number of units of credit to be granted. Advanced standing will not be granted for courses completed more than six years previously. The maximum advanced standing for a Graduate Certificate is 6 uoc (equivalent to one course).

Beyond the Certificate
A Masters of Philosophy in Higher Education will be offered in 2010. Completion of the Graduate Certificate in University Learning and Teaching (or equivalent) will be one of the requirements of this program.

Fees for UNSW staff members
Course fees for UNSW staff members who are employed in an ongoing or contract capacity will be sponsored by the University upon approval and admission into this program. Staff who are employed on a casual basis may be eligible if they meet requirements determined by the Program Authority.

A candidate who works outside of UNSW will be charged standard fees for UNSW programs.
