The Graduate Diploma in Paediatrics is an internally run program conducted at the Sydney Children’s Hospital, Randwick. It is taken over one year on a part-time basis. Candidates attend a series of lectures, grand rounds and clinical tutorials, approximately 4 hours each week, on one half day per week. In addition, it is expected that candidates attend further clinical meetings, journal clubs and grand rounds. The degree is likely to appeal to doctors interested in a career in general practice, in the early stages of specialist training in paediatrics or have an interest in developing further in depth knowledge of this specialty.
The Graduate Diploma is awarded after completing 36 UoC and satisfactory completion of written and clinical examinations occurring at the end of each semester. There are no core courses in this program. Graduates must complete 36 UoC from the following courses: CHIL9111 Babies, Brains and Genes 6 UoC (Semester 1) CHIL9112 Food, Hormones, Gut and Growth 6 UoC (Semester 1) CHIL9116 The Major Organ Systems 6 UoC (Semester 1) CHIL9117 The Body’s Defences and Infection 6 UoC (Semester 2) CHIL9118 Surgery, Emergency and Imaging 6 UoC (Semester 2) CHIL9119 Social and Behavioural Paediatrics 6 UoC (Semester 2) The Graduate Diploma is intended only for postgraduates who have medical degrees registrable in Australia and who are able to secure a paediatric appointment, salaried or otherwise, in a teaching hospital recognised by the University of New South Wales, and recognised by the program coordinator as providing sufficient clinical paediatric experience. The School of Women’s and Children’s Health takes no responsibility for organising employment. Generally speaking, candidates are expected to have a minimum of six months full time dedicated paediatric experience. Doctors working in General Practice may also be eligible and are advised to contact the Program coordinator for further details. Students should note that if they have to repeat the year due to failure in one or more courses, they must re-enrol in and satisfactorily complete all courses in order to qualify for the Graduate Diploma. Clinical Tutorials are provided exclusively for UNSW candidates and take place in Semester Two Assessment for learning Semester 1: MiniCEX, LogBook, Case Presentation, Mid Year Review with Program coordinator.
