The Master of IT is intended for students with no or minimal prior computing background or students with some computing background who want to obtain a broad understanding of computing.
Program Objectives and Learning Outcomes The aim of this program is to provide students with a broad-based IT education, and more specialised knowledge in up to two areas, enabling them to work in a range of positions in the IT industry.
It is similar in scope to CSE's undergraduate BE (Computer Engineering) program, while still allowing for a variable mix between breadth and depth amongst sub-fields. Students are required to complete the following course:
Students are required to complete the remaining 15 courses from the MIT Course List with approved non-CSE electives (including 1 free elective) being taken at a ratio no greater than 1:4 for every CSE course completed.
Students with a strong background in computing may be eligible to reduce the length of their degree by up to one year and should contact the School of Computer Science and Engineering for more information. Entry Requirements At least a four year undergraduate degree equivalent to a standard Australian bachelor degree in engineering or science; and a high credit average achieved over the final two years of study.
OR A three year undergraduate degree equivalent to a standard Australian bachelor degree in computer science; and a high credit average achieved over the final two years of study. OR Completion of the Graduate Diploma of IT Major(s) Students are required to complete three courses to satisfy the major.
Up to two of the following majors will be awarded on completion of the program. Students should apply to the CSE Student Office for the addition of a second major. COMPAS8543 - Artificial Intelligence COMPBS8543 - Bioinformatics COMPCS8543 - Computing & Information Technology (default major) COMPDS8543 - Database Systems COMPES8543 - e-Commerce Systems COMPIS8543 - Internetworking Course Groups Course availability is subject to timetabling and teaching resources. Extended versions of any course may be used instead. Project Option Students are permitted to substitute 12-18uoc in their final semester with a project of equal value provided they meet the following criteria: 1. Have completed (or have advanced standing in) 72uoc; and 2. Have obtained agreement from a CSE academic supervisor; and 3. Have maintained a distinction level performance in the program. Projects are graded, and students deliver a seminar and submit a written report. Students should seek agreement from a supervisor prior to submitting a Project Nomination form to the Postgraduate Coordinator.
