Stream Outline

A specialist stream in the Master of Education program designed to address the increasing demands for knowledge and skills in teaching English to speakers of other languages (TESOL), including children and adults learning English as an additional language or dialect (EALD) in an English-medium context or as a foreign language. The Master of Education in TESOL is designed both for teachers who want to gain an accredited specialist postgraduate qualification in TESOL and/or update their qualifications and skills as specialist English language teachers to teach in Australia or overseas, as well as for teachers of other disciplines in English-speaking schools and higher education institutions who want to enhance their inclusion of students from diverse linguistics and cultural backgrounds.

Stream Learning Outcomes

At the end of the stream, students should be able to:

Demonstrate an advanced understanding of the field of education as it relates to their specialist area of study, and the ability to synthesize and apply disciplinary principles and practices to new or complex environments.
Demonstrate an in-depth understanding of research-based learning and the ability to plan, analyse, present implement and evaluate complex activities that contribute to advanced professional practice and/or intellectual scholarship in education.
Demonstrate advanced critical thinking and problem solving skills.
Communicate effectively to a range of audiences, and be capable of independent and collaborative enquiry and team-based leadership.
Demonstrate an understanding of international perspectives relevant to the educational field.
Demonstrate an advanced capacity to recognise and negotiate the complex and often contested values and ethical practices that underlie education.

Stream Structure

The program consists of six core courses, including the option of 25 days of supervised professional practice in an intensive English language setting or mainstream school or other educational organisation with EALD classes, plus research methods and a capstone project (48 units of credit).

Note: Students who combine a Masters of Education (TESOL) specialisation with a Master of Applied Linguistics cannot take any LING electives in their MEd.

Note: Students who need an accredited specialist qualification in TESOL for teaching in Australia, and have no prior studies in TESOL must take EDST5150, EDST5440, EDST5441 & EDST5325.

Students with an existing accredited specialist qualification in TESOL may take up to two other elective courses offered by the School of Education instead of two core courses in TESOL. One or both of the two elective courses may be education courses outside the field of TESOL (e.g., educational leadership, special education, gifted education etc).
