Stream Outline

Business Intelligence and Analytics has evolved from the information systems domain. Big data has two sources: data generated within the organisation and data generated outside the organisation. Examples of these two sources include:

Within the organisation:
  • Emails
  • IT systems logs
  • Business process events
  • Sponsored social media
  • Blogs
  • Wikis
  • Documents

Outside organisations:
  • Social media sites
  • Web browsing and search
  • Web sites
  • Communication (data and telecommunications) events.
Clearly the collection and storage of big data is enabled and managed by information technology. Important issues of big data management and manipulation fall within the information systems domain: data management, data mining, visualisation, data security, information systems risk, and data privacy. There is a significant role for professionals with an IS perspective who understand, at a technology and organisation level, how information is captured, structured and stored, governed and kept secure, how to draw insights from the information, and how to link those insights to business strategy. This role is clearly within the information systems domain and is the focus of the extension option. The extension option is designed to meet the needs of students by offering a suite of courses that:

  • provides excellent employment prospects.
The needs of employers are met by providing graduates with: an understanding of business; necessary technical skills; an ability to work effectively in multifunctional teams; strong communication skills; and hands on experience with complex analytical tools.

Students who successfully complete the four courses will be eligible for certification as a Business Analyst by SAS.

Stream Structure

Master of Commerce (Extension) students must complete:
  • 2 MCom core courses
  • 3 Gateway courses - made up of designated specialist core course/s depending on the specialisation chosen
  • 6 Specialisation courses
  • 4 additional courses
  • 1 Capstone course
