Stream Outline

The Master of Engineering in Mechanical Engineering is defined by a core of disciplinary knowledge, advanced disciplinary knowledge and an advanced research component.

The stream is offered as a part of the 8621 program and requires the completion of 96 UOC of courses, including:
  • 36 UOC disciplinary courses
  • 30 UOC advanced disciplinary courses
  • 12 UOC Engineering and Technical Management courses
  • 12 UOC research project
  • 6 UOC advanced course in mechanical design

Stream Structure

To qualify for the Masters Degree, students should successfully complete courses that total at least 96 UOC as outlined in Years 1 and 2 below.

YEAR 1

Advanced Course in Mechanical Design - 6 UOC

Disciplinary Knowledge Courses - 36 UOC (6 courses) from the following list

Advanced Disciplinary Knowledge Courses - 6 UOC (1 course) from the following list:
  • MECH9420 Composite Materials and Mechanics (6 UOC)

YEAR 2

Research-related Courses - 12 UOC
  • MECH9011 - ME Project A (6 UOC)
  • MECH9012 - ME Project B (6 UOC)

Engineering and Technical Management Courses - 12 UOC (2 courses) from the following list *

Advanced Disciplinary Knowledge Courses - 24 UOC (4 courses) from the following list
  • MECH9420 Composite Materials and Mechanics (6 UOC)
In addition, a further requirement for the program is the completion of 60 days of Mechanical Engineering related industrial experience.

* Other Engineering and Technical Management courses may be taken with the approval of the Stream Authority. Please note that where there is an equivalent school course (in the case of GSOE9810, GSOE9820 and GSOE9830), students are expected to complete the course offered by their own school).

Entry Requirements
It is expected that students entering this stream will have completed the equivalent of at least the first 3 years of a UNSW Bachelor of Engineering (BE) degree in mechanical engineering. The BE is an accredited program under the Washington Accord. As such, the entry criteria are described below:
  • Students commencing this Master of Engineering program do so after satisfactory completion of a 4-year non-accredited (under the Washington Accord) Bachelor of Engineering degree in the area of Mechanical Engineering, or equivalent. In addition, they must have achieved a minimum overall average of at least 65% or equivalent, over the duration of the 4-year qualifying Bachelor’s degree.
  • Alternatively, eligible applicants include those who hold a 3-year Engineering Science degree in Mechanical Engineering, at least equivalent to the first three years of an Mechanical Engineering degree accredited under the Washington accord, and with a minimum overall average of 65% or equivalent.
