Stream Outline

This specialisation provides students with advanced study options across the breadth of specialisations in Civil Engineering as well as courses in transport engineering and construction management as tabled below.

ENTRY REQUIREMENTS

A student must hold a Bachelor of Engineering with at least Honours II/2 (or equivalent) or hold a Graduate Diploma of Engineering with at least a credit average in a relevant discipline or an equivalent qualification from UNSW or another recognised university or tertiary institution in order to be admitted to the program.

Stream Structure

MEngSc students must complete a total of 96UOC of courses.

Please note that the availability of the courses may vary from semester to semester and courses may be offered in alternate years.

DISCIPLINARY KNOWLEDGE COURSES - minimum 24 UOC (4 courses) chosen from the following:

Project Management

Geotechnical Engineering

Structures

Surveying

Transport

Water and Wastewater
ADVANCED SPECIALISATION DISCIPLINARY KNOWLEDGE COURSES - minimum 24 UOC (4 courses) chosen from the following:

Students may choose courses from any postgraduate specialisation offered from the School of Civil and Environmental Engineering:
  • Environmental Engineering
  • Geotechnical Engineering & Engineering Geology
  • Project Management
  • Structural Engineering
  • Transportation Engineering
  • Water, Wastewater and Waste Engineering
  • Water Resources (includes coastal engineering courses)
as well as the courses listed below from construction management.

Research-based Courses - 18 UOC:
Electives - 24 UOC

Students may choose any course for which they are eligible to enrol, as electives, including any of the courses listed above.

At least 6 UOC must be taken from the Engineering & Technical Management Courses. For the Civil Engineering specialisation we recommend the following Engineering and Technical management courses:
In addition, students may select any ETM elective in the consolidated Faculty List with approval.

Exemptions or Advanced Standing

Exemptions and advanced standing rules for the stream follow the program rules. A student may apply for exemptions. Students with a four year honours degree (for example in Civil Engineering) may obtain a maximum of 48UOC of exemptions, Full details are noted on the program handbook page.
