Stream Outline

The overall goal of this program is to offer a graduate degree in development practice with an international focus. By the end of the program candidates can expect to have substantial knowledge and a range of skills related to the planning, delivery and management of programs relevant to international and local social and community development, aid work (policy and practice) and human rights. Students can combine core courses with electives covering areas of Development Management; Political Economy and International Relations; Human Rights and Politics; Indigenous peoples and Refugees; Global Health; and the Environment. Internships and special projects are also offered as elective courses.Additional research training and practice opportunities are available.

Graduate Attributes

At the end of the stream, students should have acquired all of the following graduate attributes:
  1. Demonstrate an advanced knowledge and understanding of international development politics, policy, research and practice.
  2. The ability to apply the critical skills and tools required to conceptualise plan, deliver and manage programs and projects relevant to international social development, aid work, community development, advocacy and human rights.

Stream Structure

The Master of Development Studies in International Development (program 8939, plan code SOCWKS8939) comprises a total of 48 units of credit of core and elective courses. Students will complete five core courses and three elective courses.
