Stream Outline

How do commercial organisations manage operational risks? This Master of Commerce specialisation examines the everyday risks in carrying out an organisation’s activities, through people, systems and processes, how to manage and mitigate those risks, and the challenges involved.

Stream Structure

Master of Commerce (MCom) students must complete:
  • 2 MCom core courses
  • 3 Gateway courses - made up of designated specialist core course/s depending on the specialisation chosen
  • 6 Specialisation courses
  • 1 Capstone course
Master of Commerce (Extension), students with two specialisations to complete, where possible must use their elective or remaining Gateway option to complete the designated Gateway course option for the Sub-specialisation.

Two Compulsory Core courses:

Choose 1 from 2 Data Analysis Courses:

Substitution may occur based upon the prior background and studies of the student. Proof of prior studies or skill is required.

Three Compulsory Gateway courses:
ACCT5906 a substitution may be granted if the student has Accounting or decision making using financial information in their prior studies. They may then choose an additional course from the Gateway list of courses.


Three Required Specialisation courses:

Three Elective Specialisation courses from the following:

One Capstone course:
OR, if students have chosen at least 2 FINS electives:
Provides a ‘cohort’ experience in a work-relevant context for all specialisations in the general area of Strategy, Marketing, Risk and Management.

If you choose to study the Master of Commerce (Extension) program 8417, you have the option to choose 4 courses (to provide you with depth of learning) from the following Sub- specialisations:
  • Accounting
  • Finance
  • Marketing
  • Information Systems
  • Business Law
  • Taxation
  • *General Option
* The General Option sub-specialisation allows you to choose two courses from the MCom and optional two courses outside of the MCom (other programs within ASB) or courses from other Faculties(with permission).

It is recommended students contact the ASB Student Centre for guidance on options available to increase depth of learning.
