Stream Outline

The School of Electrical Engineering and Telecommunications offers a Satellite Systems Engineering stream of the Masters of Engineering Science Extension. Unlike other programs, which tend to be application-specific (that is master's in satellite communications), this stream will focus on the systems engineering aspect of satellites before delving into the areas of applications of satellites. Thus, the stream comprises a complement of core and elective courses that are six UOC each, and a year-long practical project. These courses give students a comprehensive foundation in satellite systems engineering in all its aspects from the space segment to the ground segment and typical applications. The stream serves as a point of entry to a profession in the space industry, or to a research career in space.

Stream Structure

Please note that the stream structure below lists the courses that fulfil the requirements of the degree, but does not indicate the recommended sequence in which individual courses should be taken. Students are strongly encouraged to consult the Electrical Engineering School website for the recommended stream structure and for advice on course selection sequences that are consistent with timetabling and availability.

Professional Development Courses – 24 UOC (4 courses):

Professional development, if required, will include:
AND
  • 18 UOC (3 courses) as determined by the Program Authority.
Specialisation Courses – Minimum 36 UOC (6 courses):

Students are required to take the following FOUR courses:
  • AERO9500 Space Systems Architectures and Orbits (6 UOC)
  • AERO9610 The Space Segment (6 UOC)
Students must choose a minimum of two and maximum of four courses from the following list (12-24 UOC):
  • GMAT9765 Satellite Applications II (6 UOC)
  • ELEC9765 Space Law and Radio Regulations (6 UOC)
Project 12 UOC or 24 UOC

Either
OR
  • ELEC9768 Satellite Engineering Project A (12 UOC) and
  • ELEC9769 Satellite Engineering Project B (12 UOC)
Students must undertake a compulsory 12 UOC or 24 UOC project over two sessions.

It is recommended students undertake the 24 UOC project. The 24 UOC project consists of two 12 UOC project courses, each containing a significant management component.

Engineering and Technical Management Courses – 12–24 UOC

Students are required to take 12-24 UOC Engineering and Technical Management. A listing of Engineering Technical Management courses can be found at GSOEAS8539

Students who successfully complete the 24 UOC project may be granted exemption of 12 UOC Engineering and Technical Management.

NOTE

It is recommended that students take the maximum EIGHT courses from the Specialisation Courses list, and the 24 UOC project in which 12 UOC of advanced standing toward the Engineering and Technical Management requirement is granted.
