Plan Outline

The Master of Arts (Extension) by coursework in Interpreting & Translation Studies (Program 8229) aims to prepare students for professional activities as highly qualified translators and interpreters, by developing the necessary competencies to meet the challenges of the growing domestic and international markets. Courses in interpreting and translation are offered in English, with streams in the following languages: French, German, Indonesian, Japanese, Korean, Russian and Spanish.

This program is accredited by the National Accreditation Authority for Translators and Interpreters (NAATI) at Professional Translator and Professional Interpreter level.

Plan Structure

Students are required to complete a total of 12 courses over the period of at least 3 semesters, including 8 core MODL courses (3 contact hours per week) and four elective courses (LING and/or courses from other schools in the Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences, 2 or more contact hours per week), 6 UOC each course.

Elective courses

Students have to choose 4 courses below:
Postgraduate Contextual Studies courses from other Schools in the UNSW Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences that provide the necessary contextual knowledge relevant to I & T Studies, eg., International Relations, Development Studies, Journalism and Communication.
Students who wish to enrol in elective courses that are not listed above have to obtain approval from the program convenor in Interpreting & Translation studies.
