Description

This course will examine key issues and their implications relevant to science education through critical analysis of current research findings, theories and practices. Underpinned by discussion of historical and philosophical perspectives on science education, students will examine issues relating to
  • the role of the science teacher as mediator and facilitator of students’ knowledge construction
  • the influences of teachers’ beliefs and pedagogical content knowledge
  • debates about science learning theories and practices (for example socio-constructivist, experiential, enquiry-based and brain-based learning) and contemporary approaches to teaching and learning science with a focus on the role of ICT in science education
  • inclusive science education addressing issues such as gender and special needs
  • curriculum changes and trends in school science
  • national and international trends in assessing scientific literacy and understanding
