Description

This course examines recent changes in the theory and practice of employment relations in the international context in light of organisational and employment changes triggered by 'globalisation'. In particular it focuses on concerns that increased international competition can erode conditions of work. The course examines employment relations 'models' in an increasingly globalised context, and explores the transfer of 'best practice' work organisation. Mechanisms of setting and defending labour standards are considered, including their maintenance role in trade liberalisation and investment treaties through the enforcement mechanisms of such institutions as the World Trade Organisation. Topics covered include: globalisation, 'model' employment relations systems, international unionism and the future of unions, diverse national management systems, the relations between employment relations systems, the role of 'model' systems in economic performance and social protection.
