Description

Examines and explores the steering of organisations and organisational activity including: how organisational theories and arrangements influence policy; management theory and trends in management philosophy and practices and how these influence the selection of policy; and how policy options and delivery are influenced by management. Students should gain a deeper critical understanding of and be able to analyse organisation and management activities and their influence upon the policy process.

Learning Outcomes

Upon completion of this course, students should be able to:
  • Explain and recognize a range of theoretical concepts of organisation and management
  • Integrate organisation and management theory into the analysis of policy development and policy implementation issues
  • Analyse and understand the implications of different models of organization for mobilizing resources in response to public policy issues
  • Analyse processes of change across organizations and complex policy systems,
  • Demonstrate an ability to analyse the role of management and organization in the development of public policy and policy implementation
  • Demonstrate improved presentation and analytical skills
  • More effectively undertake group work and have acquired an improved understanding of the dynamics that influence group work.

  • First group presentation and written report – Background briefing- 20%
  • Second group presentation – Frames of analysis - 20%
  • Individual written work - 40%
  • Four reading reports - 20%
