Description

Examines selected representative international institutions, particularly in terms of their structure; their activities and procedures; their role in and contribution to global order; and their viability and future directions. The selection includes the United Nations Organisation itself, one or two specialised agencies and one or two international non-governmental organisations.

Learning Outcomes

At the completion of this course students should be able to:
  • Demonstrate a basic knowledge of the promises of, and obstacles to, effective international co-operation
  • Demonstrate a critical understanding of the ways in which international relations are organised
  • Understand the key approaches to the study of international institutions
  • Critically evaluate competing perspectives on international organisational activity.

Assessment

  • Seminar participation - 10%
  • Essay (2500 words) - 40%
  • Collaborative project report - 50%
