Description

A study of classical and modern theories of war and peace with a specific focus on ethical and legal issues.

Learning Outcomes

By the end of this course students should be able to:
  • Demonstrate a critical understanding of the laws governing the use of convention and unconventional violence
  • Demonstrate familiarity with a range of classical and contemporary ideas about war and peace
  • Analyse and critique contemporary policy initiatives in the diplomatic field
  • Demonstrate advanced reading, research and analytical skills.

Assessment

  • Short essay (1500-2000 words) - 30%
  • Long essay (4000 words) - 60%
  • Seminar participation - 10%
