Description

Introduces a conceptual framework for undertaking research in music education, music history, performance, ethnomusicology, composition and analysis. Through critical evaluation of prominent research publications in music education and musicology, develops skills in appropriate qualitative, philosophical, historical and experimental methodologies.

Learning Outcomes

By the end of the course, students will:
  • Have gained a solid understanding of what research in both musicology and music education entails
  • Be familiar with appropriate and current approaches used in the disciplines including qualitative, philosophical, historical, descriptive and experimental methodologies
  • Be able to critically evaluate and discuss a range of approaches to music research, and will have undertaken a thorough investigation of one particular area of research.

Assessment

  • Essay (2000 words) - 40%
  • Reflective journal - 20%
  • Contribution to class activities - 20%
  • Open book exam - 20%
