Description

Provides students with skills necessary for practical experience in translating and consecutive interpreting a wide range of text types and genres, in a variety of fields and settings. Students will become familiar with different contexts in which translators and interpreters work in the international and domestic markets, including education, hospitality and tourism, commerce and trade, social welfare, and science and technology. Students will focus on active listening, comprehension, reformulation, memory training and note-taking. They will develop analytical and reflective skills that will enable them to assess the quality of their own translation and interpretation.

Note: This course is taught in English and available to students with advanced bilingual proficiency.

Learning Outcomes

By the end of the course, students should be able to:
  • Gain a number of practical skills in translation and consecutive interpreting at professional levels of different text types and genres, in a variety of fields and settings
  • Develop the analytical and research skills needed to be proficient in translation and interpreting, including comprehension, text analysis, note taking, background research, use of reference materials and compilation of thematic glossaries
  • Evaluate the quality of their own interpreting and translation critically and that of their peers according to criteria of professional interpreting and translation.

Assessment

  • Ongoing assessments (reports, self-assessment and peer-assessment) - 45%
  • Independent translation/interpreting project - 45%
  • Class participation - 10%
