Description

Introduction to the basic philosophy and history of the randomized controlled trial. Key definitions and concepts such as the intention to treat principle. Distinctions between different types of trials, such as parallel group versus crossover trials, superiority versus equivalence trials, and different phases of drug trials. Methods of randomization. Sample size determination. Interim analyses and group sequential trials. Methods for longitudinal clinical trials. Methods for crossover trials. Meta-analysis. Surrogate outcomes. Extensive use will be made of the statistical computing language R in analysing real datasets.
