Description

Introduces students to the essentials of the foundational areas in linguistics, including the basic principles of phonology, morphology, syntax, semantics and pragmatics, also addresses primary topics in language acquisition and the investigation of the relationship between language and other cognitive domains.

Learning Outcomes

At the end of this course, students should be able to:
  • Describe and explain the most salient aspects of language structure within the context of cross-linguistic grammatical variation
  • Apply the techniques of phonology to transcription and data analysis
  • Recognise the morphological structure of words
  • Describe how the meaning of linguistic expressions relates to context
  • Explain the social and regional dimensions of language variation
  • Understand the basic principles of language change.
