Description

Looks at the place of language in social, institutional, and cultural contexts, especially the pragmatic sources of language breakdowns and communicative misencounters by identifying and describing major factors in communicative events. Analysis of a range of case studies to illustrate different methods of analysis and sources of miscommunication.

Learning Outcomes

At the end of this course, students should be able to:
  • Analyse and explain the place of language in social, institutional, and cultural contexts
  • Explain the pragmatic sources of language breakdowns and communicative misencounters by identifying and describing major factors in communicative events
  • Demonstrate an understanding of a range of different methods of analysis and sources of miscommunication.
