Description

Considers the impact of modern linguistics on the theoretical and practical aspects of interlingual translation and/or interpretation. Issues and debates will be discussed, along with the theoretical frameworks behind some major programs.

Learning Outcomes

On completion of this course, students should gain:

An understanding of issues, debates, and theoretical framework on translation theory and practice
An ability to assess the impact of translation theory on translation practice and how the two interrelate
Skills in assessing the impacts of modern linguistics on both the theoretical and practical aspects of inter-lingual translation and/or interpretation
An ability to analyse source language texts and target language texts in relation to translation equivalence and to the debates around the concept of equivalence.

Assessment

Short analytical assignment - 20%
Short essay - comparative analysis of texts - 30%
Major essay - 50%
