Description

Explores the linguistic, psycholinguistic and sociolinguistic dimensions of bilingualism. Issues considered include definitions of bilingualism, bilingual competence, code switching, identity and bilingualism, and language policy and bilingualism.

Learning Outcomes

By the end of this course, students should be able to:
  • Develop a broad understanding of methodological and analytical issues in the study of bilingualism with particular reference to linguistic and psycholinguistic aspects of bilingualism
  • Be familiar with some of the current debates in the analysis of bilingual language development, the bilingual (mental) lexicon and the formal analysis of code-switching.

Assessment

  • Class presentation and report - 20%
  • Two assignments - 20% (10% each)
  • Test - 20%
  • Essay (4000 words) - 40%
