Description

Introduces Korea's role in East Asia in the late 19th and 20th centuries, focussing on social, cultural and political conflicts with Japan, particularly the intellectual foundations of its national identity.

Learning Outcomes

On completion of this course, students should:
  • Understand the origins of cultural conflict between Japan and Korea, as well as the importance of that conflict in the broader context of East Asia
  • Be able to discuss the major intellectual and cultural trends that have defined Korea in distinction to and Japan
  • Be able to critically assess claims in nationalist Japanese and Korean historiography and understand the reasons for such claims.

  • Essay - 30%
