Description

Current issues in teaching /learning Japanese as a foreign language are explored. Topics include innovative curriculum development, materials and resources, teacher roles, teacher discourse, teaching styles that promote learning, learner autonomy, collaborative learning, teaching of culture, communication and grammar, assessment and evaluation. Students will have opportunity to experience micro teaching, as well as observe undergraduate Japanese classes at UNSW. Conducted in Japanese.

Assumed knowledge: Third-year level proficiency in Japanese.

Learning Outcomes

  • Identify skills and knowledge needed in effective TJFL (Teaching Japanese as a Foreign Language)
  • Understand one's strengths and weaknesses in becoming effective Japanese language teachers
  • Gain a familiarity with the academic discipline of TJFL
  • Be able to make critical observations of, and gain practical experiences in, Japanese language teaching.

Assessment

  • Report on monographs in the field of TJFL - 30%
  • Class observation report - 20%
  • Participation in class discussion - 40%
  • Self-discovery report - 10%
