Description

Develops students' understanding of leadership theories, current research and practice. Considers the major approaches to leadership such as trait, behaviour, contingency and transformational leadership theory. Also considers current research and practice in the context of education.

Note: This course may be taken as an elective in the Master of Educational Administration program.

Learning Outcomes

At the end of this course, students should be able to:
  • Discuss the nature and importance of leadership
  • Describe and critically appraise different theoretical approaches to leadership
  • Identify and analyse research evidence with respect to educational leadership
  • Summarise and evaluate a redefined model for educational leadership
  • Describe the challenges facing schools and determine the role of the educational leader.

Assessment

  • Minor assignment - 5%
  • Oral presentation - 20%
  • Leader analysis - 30%
  • Major assignment - 45%
