Description

Examines some central philosophical questions raised by the Scientific Revolution - the role of authority in science, the place of mathematics in science, the relation of sensory evidence to theory, the place of metaphysics in science, the construction and interpretation of experiments and how these can bear upon school history and science courses. Examines the extent to which individual learning recapitulates the history of science.

Learning Outcomes

On the completion of this course, students will learn to identify philosophical and historical issues in science education, and how to discuss and research such issues.

Assessment

  • Essay (2500 words) - 50%
  • Preparation of a unit of work utilising history and/or philosophy of science (the unit can be for primary or secondary classes but not science classes). Those without teaching experience or contacts will do a second essay (1500 words) - 25%
  • Augmented weekly notes - 25%
