Description

This course investigates the writings of architectural theorists from Vitruvius to the present. Authors to be studied include Alberti, Semper, Loos and Le Corbusier. Interpretations of the texts will be focussed around specific issues critical to modern practice. These will range from broad social concerns, such as the ethical role of the architect, to the qualities of architectural form, such as the relationship of structure to ornament. The aim of the subject is to provide a theoretical foundation capable of responding to the problems we now face. In 2008 a compulsory component of the course will be attendance at a conference held at UNSW during the first week of November.
