Description

Explores the history and culture of Indigenous Australian peoples in social justice, post-colonial and emerging Indigenous emancipatory frameworks. Social and community development theory and practice in Indigenous communities are assessed critically in the light of these theories and culturally sensitive and safe developmental approaches and skills are discussed and applied to Indigenous community settings.

Learning Outcomes

At the end of the course, students should be able to:
  • Demonstrate a working knowledge of Aboriginal cultural and community protocols
  • Recognise the diversity of Aboriginal cultures and peoples
  • Understand the issues that impact upon Aboriginal communities and people
  • Demonstrate an understanding of the complexities of the relationships between workers in human services in community settings and Aboriginal clients and how this impacts upon the working relationship
  • Outline the aspects required to work in a culturally safe manner.

Assessment

  • Process and reflective journal - 30%
  • Groupwork presentation - 20%
  • Final long assignment - 50%
