Description

Current trends and theory in international organisational management are analysed critically for their applicability in the social development arena. Budgeting and accounting practices, staff recruitment and staff management, ethical public relations and marketing for social development settings are examined. Strategies for transferring these skills to local partner agencies, and methods of evaluating program management in funded programs are also elements studied.

Note: As this is an elective course, it will be offered only when the demand is deemed sufficient by the Head of School.

Learning Outcomes

On completion of this course, students will have the knowledge and information to:
  • Specify the roles of and competencies required for oneself as a program manger and facilitator of change
  • Identify strategies and design approaches for effective communication between a wide range of people and stakeholder organisations in different cultures and settings
  • Identify the different contexts and roles of manging programs from a distance and in-country
  • Design an effective management strategy for: a) distance management b) in-country management
  • Demonstrate an understanding of the sometimes different perspectives of donor agencies, Northern and Southern non government organisations (NGO's), community based organisations and project participants which are relevant to management practice
  • Incorporate transparent and ethical management principles into program management practice.

  • Assignment (2000 words) - 30%
  • Class presentation and 1000 word paper - 40%
