Description

Reviews the values, knowledge and skills required to design and evaluate social development programs in the international/cross-cultural contexts. Major topics include cooperation in change, methods of needs assessment, defining outcome objectives, theories of decision making, models of scheduling and implementation, theory and practice of evaluation including development of criteria, data collection and analysis, the ethics and uses of evaluation. Students engage in a program planning and evaluation exercise to apply theory covered in the course.

Learning Outcomes

Upon completion of this course, students should be able to:
  • Assess the strengths and weaknesses of tools, skills and information with which to design, implement, monitor and evaluate social development projects
  • Understand the theoretical underpinnings of project management in social development and know how to apply this in practical situations
  • Recognise and apply a range of techniques for project management
  • Display a more advanced understanding of issues raised by or dealt with by managing change, decision-making, ethical issues in project management, needs assessment, problem identification, defining aims and objectives, implementation, monitoring, evaluation and impact assessment.

  • Group assignment, written and presentation - 35%
  • Project design document (2000 words) - 35%
  • Implementation strategy assignment - 30%
