Description

Examines selected representative international institutions, particularly in terms of their structure; their activities and procedures; their role in and contribution to global order; and their viability and future directions. The selection includes the United Nations Organisation itself, one or two specialised agencies and one or two international non-governmental organisations.

Learning Outcomes

At the completion of this course students should be able to:

Demonstrate a basic knowledge of the promises of, and obstacles to, effective international co-operation
Demonstrate a critical understanding of the ways in which international relations are organised
Understand the key approaches to the study of international institutions
Critically evaluate competing perspectives on international organisational activity.

Assessment

Seminar participation - 10%
Essay (2500 words) - 40%
Collaborative project report - 50%
