Description

A study of classical and modern theories of war and peace with a specific focus on ethical and legal issues.

Learning Outcomes

By the end of this course students should be able to:

Demonstrate a critical understanding of the laws governing the use of convention and unconventional violence
Demonstrate familiarity with a range of classical and contemporary ideas about war and peace
Analyse and critique contemporary policy initiatives in the diplomatic field
Demonstrate advanced reading, research and analytical skills.

Assessment

Short essay (1500-2000 words) - 30%
Long essay (4000 words) - 60%
Seminar participation - 10%
