Description By definition, evidence based medicine is the conscientious, explicit, and judicious use of current best evidence in making decisions about the care of individual patients. The practice of evidence based medicine means integrating individual clinical expertise with the best available external clinical evidence from systematic research. This course seeks to introduce Evidence Based Health Care, explain why is it important and outline the elements involved in practicing in an evidence-based manner. Issues covered include what constitutes evidence, identifying the evidence base, identifying level of evidence, searching for evidence by focusing and filtering, and the critical appraisal of Evidence Based Health Care. Potential benefits of using Evidence Based Health Care for patients and health care organization are discussed. Evidence Based Health Care will require the introduction of Information and Communication Technology to support it, including protocol-based systems. The course will cover the various forms of protocol-based support and the technologies that support them including workflow control, knowledge acquisition and maintenance systems, knowledge representation and ontological issues.
