Description

An introduction to Systemic Functional Grammar. Provides a model of grammar which analyses authentic texts in their social context, and which has had a significant impact on education in mother tongue and second/foreign language situations. We develop a set of tools which focus on the lexical and grammatical patterns of a variety of texts from different genres and registers.

Learning Outcomes

At the end of this course, students should be able to:

Explain the distinctive features of a functional model of language
Describe the ways in which context relates to language through genre and register
Analyse linguistics patterns at the level of text, clause and group which express these relations
Analyse a wide range of texts in terms of different variables of meaning
Apply critical thinking skills in the analysis, interpretation and discussion of texts
Identify how the analytical tools apply to issues of language learning and teaching.
