Description

An introduction to Systemic Functional Grammar. Provides a model of grammar which analyses authentic texts in their social context, and which has had a significant impact on education in mother tongue and second/foreign language situations. We develop a set of tools which focus on the lexical and grammatical patterns of a variety of texts from different genres and registers.

Learning Outcomes

At the end of this course, students should be able to:
  • Explain the distinctive features of a functional model of language
  • Describe the ways in which context relates to language through genre and register
  • Analyse linguistics patterns at the level of text, clause and group which express these relations
  • Analyse a wide range of texts in terms of different variables of meaning
  • Apply critical thinking skills in the analysis, interpretation and discussion of texts
  • Identify how the analytical tools apply to issues of language learning and teaching.
