Description The Indonesian response to colonial domination in the 20th century, the impact of Japanese occupation, the Indonesian Revolution which culminated in the defeat of the Dutch in 1949, and the search for a new political order down to the 'coup' of 1965. Emphasis on the communists, the Muslims and the populists, and attempts to create political linkages between the elites and the masses. Analysis of those forces for and against an economic and social revolution in Indonesia and of the emergence of the military as a dominant force in Indonesian society.
