Description

Factors which affect learning and problem solving. Cognitive theories that can guide us in designing instruction. How to format instruction so that it accords with students' mental processes. Techniques designed to hasten the development of problem solving expertise.

Learning Outcomes

At the completion of this course students are expected to:
  • Understand human cognitive structures and processes and the instructional consequences that flow from those structures
  • Identify how cognitive structures and information structures interact with instructional design and teaching procedures
  • Discuss a variety of instructional designs and procedures identify their strengths and weaknesses.

Assessment

  • Class feedback task - 10%
  • Seminar presentation - 10%
  • Essay - 80%
