Description

Chinese autobiography covers a literary genre that is new in China. Includes comprehensive theoretical analysis of issues of voice, narratology, mimetics, and Chinese neologisms in the early twentieth century.

Assumed Knowledge: Third-year proficiency in Chinese.

Learning Outcomes

Students who have completed this course should:
  • Gain a deeper command of autobiographical genres in general and Chinese autobiographical traditions in particular
  • Gain a sophisticated understanding of Chinese literature in the 1st-person from the last century
  • Gain experience in preparing and writing an upper-level humanities-based research essay
  • Be able to make complex comparisons between and among modern Chinese literary genres.
