Politicians are elected by the people to represent their interests in the government of a state, region or nation. In Australia, they are the decision-makers in Commonwealth, State and Territory parliaments. They contribute to the development of government policy and of legislation through the analysis of current legislation, proposed changes and changing community needs. Parliamentarians are those government representatives who work at the Commonwealth and State or Territory levels of government are called parliamentarians, while Councillors are those employed with local government councils.
