Academic Rules for the Bachelor of Economics (BEc) 3543

Content of Program

To be awarded a degree at Pass level, the BEc must contain:

1. A minimum of 144 units of credit (UOC).
2. A minimum of 96 UOC of courses offered by the UNSW Business School.
3. A minimum of 78 UOC of courses offered by the School of Economics (but see note below), consisting of
  • One core course (ECON1401, 6UoC).
  • At least one Major from within Economics, consisting of 10 courses (60 UoC). Refer to Table A on the Bachelor of Economics 3543 program page.
  • At least two economics elective courses (12 UoC).
Note: The Qualifying List of Economics Courses includes courses from other Faculties specified as accepted substitutes for Economics courses (e.g. MATH1031 for ECON1202) and some specified non-Economics courses offered by the School of Accounting in the UNSW Business School, specifically ACCT3563/ACCT3573 (Hons) and ACCT3583 /ACCT3593 (Hons). Refer to Table A on the Bachelor of Economics 3543 program page.

4. One Business School First-Year Elective chosen from ACCT1501, FINS1613, INFS1602, MARK1012, MGMT1001, and TABL1710.

5. 12 UOC of courses from outside the UNSW Business School to fulfil the University’s General Education requirement.

6. No more than 60 UOC of Level 1 courses, excluding Level 1 courses completed as part of the General Education requirement.

Majors
  • An Economics Major is a sequence of 60 UOC courses in a single discipline or area of study.
  • 18 UOC of a Major must be at Level 3.
  • If a student chooses to complete a second major, it may be chosen from List A or List B on the Bachelor of Economics 3543 program page. A second major must include at least 6 courses not counted towards another major, with at least 3 courses at level 3. Any deficit must be made up with Economics electives.
Progression Rules

7. A minimum of 24 UOC of courses must be completed before enrolling in Level 2 courses.
8. A minimum of 48 UOC of courses must be completed before enrolling in Level 3 courses
9. Students must declare their major before commencing Year 2.

Academic Rules for the Bachelor of Commerce/Bachelor of Economic (BCom/BEc) 3521

Content of Program

To be awarded a degree at Pass level, the BCom/BEc must contain:

1. A minimum of 192 units of credit (UOC)

2. Compulsory and flexible core courses for the BCom component as follows:

Compulsory core courses: (account for 30 UOC)
Flexible Core courses:(account for 24 UOC)
Students complete three of the following flexible core courses:
3. A minimum of 78 UOC of courses offered by the School of Economics (but see note below), consisting of:
  • One core course (ECON1401, 6 UOC).
  • At least one Major from within Economics, consisting of 10 courses (60 UOC). [Refer to Table A on the Bachelor of Economics 3543 program page.
  • At least two economics elective courses (12 UoC).
Note 1: The Qualifying List of Economics Courses includes courses from other Faculties specified as accepted substitutes for Economics courses (e.g. MATH1031 for ECON1202) and some specified non-Economics courses offered by the School of Accounting in the UNSW Business School, specifically ACCT3563/ACCT3573 (Hons) and ACCT3583 /ACCT3593 (Hons). Note 2: Some of the courses required for the Economics majors are also included in the BCom core.

5. 12 UOC courses from outside the UNSW Business School to fulfil the University’s General Education requirement.

6. Maximum of 72 UOC of Level 1 courses, excluding Level 1 courses completed as part of the General Education Requirement.

Progression Rules
  • A minimum of 24 UOC of courses must be completed before enrolling in Level 2 courses.
  • A minimum of 48 UOC of courses must be completed before enrolling in Level 3 courses
  • Students must declare their major before commencing Year 2.
Other rules in the BCom and BEc will apply wherever relevant.

Academic Rules for Bachelor of Economics in dual degrees (except BCom/BEc 3521)

The requirements of the Bachelor of Economics in dual mode (96UOC) are as follows:

BEc Dual Mode

  • Compulsory Economics course (6 UOC)
  • Economics Major requirements (60 UOC)
  • Economics Electives (12 UOC)
  • UNSW Business School First-Year Elective (6 UOC)
  • UNSW Business School Electives (12 UOC)

Economics Requirements:
Students are required to complete at least 13 Economics courses(78 UoC) including:
  • ECON1401 Economic Perspectives (enrolment on completion of ECON1101)
  • A major in Economics, Econometrics or Financial Economics consisting of 10 courses (60 UOC), of which at least three courses (18 UoC) must be at lelvel 3; and
  • At least 2 additional Economics elective courses (12 UOC)
Business School Requirements:
Students are required to complete 3 Business School courses including :
  • At least 1 of the following (6 UOC) courses: ACCT1501, FINS1613, INFS1602, MARK1012, MGMT1001, or TABL1710; and
  • At least 2 additional Business School elective courses (12 UOC)
Second Major:

If a student chooses to complete a second major within the Economics degree, it may be chosen from List A or List B on the Bachelor of Economics 3543 program page. A second major must have at least 6 courses not counted towards another major, with any deficit made up with Economics electives.


Course Substitution Options:
There are courses in the School of Mathematics and Statistics (Faculty of Science) and the School of Actuarial Studies (Business School) that are alternatives for the quantitative methods courses in Economics: ECON1202 and ECON1203. Therefore:
  • Any one of the following courses is an acceptable substitute for ECON1202: MATH1031 or MATH1131 or MATH1141 or MATH1151.
  • Any one of the following courses is an acceptable substitute for ECON1203: MATH1041 or MATH2089 or MATH2099 or MATH2801 or MATH2841 or MATH2901 or ACTL2002 or ACTL2131.
If you complete the sequence MATH1131/MATH1231 or MATH1141/MATH1241 or MATH1151/MATH1251 you may use this as a substitute for the sequence ECON1202/ECON1203.
These substitutes for the compulsory core courses count towards the 16 Business School courses (96 UOC) required for the Economics component of the degree.

General Rules Relating to Every Program

Awarding degree

• A Pass degree with Distinction may be awarded if a student achieves a minimum of 75 WAM across the program and completes a minimum of 72 UOC at UNSW.

Honours

• Additional year of 48 UOC in one approved disciplinary stream, after completion of the requirements for the pass degree.
• Comprises specified courses from the relevant disciplinary stream plus a thesis
• Must be completed in two semesters following completion of the pass degree component
• Eligibility:
- minimum WAM of 70 in the relevant disciplinary stream of the Pass degree component. However please consult the relevant School as some Schools require a higher academic performance;
- pass all courses in the Pass degree component at the first attempt.
• Application: expression of interest and written application submitted to the Head of School or Honours Coordinator in the relevant School.
• Award: Class I, Class II Division 1, Class II Division II, Class III; if requirements for these classes are not met , a Pass degree will be awarded.

Prerequisites

Except in exceptional circumstances, a candidate shall not enrol in any course without having satisfied the prescribed prerequisite requirements. Please refer to the relevant School for permission to enrol in courses without having met these requirements.

Transfer between degrees

A student may request a transfer between UNSW programs through myUNSW. Please refer to the Internal Program Transfer Overview for further details.

Credit for courses passed at another University

Subject to the University rules governing admission with advanced standing, courses passed at another university may be counted towards fulfilling the requirements of the degree. Not more than fifty percent of the program requirements will be awarded as advanced standing nor will advanced standing be granted for courses completed more than 7 years before the date of admission of the applicant, except with the approval of the UNSW Business School Student Centre.
