A Message from the Dean | ||||
UNSW is a progressive university, which engages in a practical way with key contemporary social issues. That ethos is reflected in the Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences. We offer you opportunities to work with leading scholars, both established international figures in the Humanities and Social Science disciplines, and also a rising generation of outstandingly talented researchers. The Faculty is proud of the quality of the supervision we offer PhD and Masters by Research students. A dedicated Research Laboratory provides in-coming Research postgraduates with study spaces and networked computers, printers and private note storage areas. We also organise seminars and workshops, which allows further opportunities to interact with your fellow students. Individual Schools and Research Centres offer their own accommodation and computing facilities. The Faculty makes funds available to support research costs and conference attendance, and we guarantee opportunities to gain teaching experience. In 2010, we are introducing a Master of Philosophy program in Higher Education – a unique research degree, specially designed for teachers in higher education, who want to deepen their understanding of the contemporary profession and to develop their research capability in the scholarship of learning and teaching. When deciding to take a postgraduate coursework program, you may be seeking a professional qualification, preparing for a career change, or pursuing an intellectual passion. Whatever your aspiration, our offerings, whether at Graduate Certificate, Graduate Diploma or Masters level, range from interest-driven programs in the MA to such specialist fields as Journalism, Applied Linguistics, Social Development and International Relations. This year, we are offering programs in Public Relations and Advertising for the first time. Professionally oriented programs are offered in the Master of Educational Leadership, the Master of Counselling and the Master of TESOL. Another new option is the MA (Extension) in Interpreting and Translation Studies, which now has NAATI accreditation. We encourage you to take an active role in the affairs of the Faculty and the University. Postgraduate students are represented on our main decision-making body, the Academic Board, as well as on many Faculty committees. We also welcome comments and feedback, as we are always on the lookout for ways to improve your experience. The Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences at UNSW is a vibrant community of scholars and students, buzzing with challenging ideas, focused activity and progressive change. I welcome you as one of its new members, and hope that your time with us will prove stimulating, challenging and fruitful. Professor James Donald Dean, Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences |
