Overview

The Australian Defence Force Academy (ADFA) is a centre for tertiary education for the Australian Defence Force. It is located in Canberra, the national capital. Within the Academy, The University of New South Wales (UNSW) has established a college, known as UNSW@ADFA (formally University College), which is responsible for conducting courses of study and research.

UNSW@ADFA's small but pleasant campus is located in the upmarket suburb of Campbell close to the CBD. UNSW@ADFA boasts a wide variety sports facilities, sporting clubs and student organisations. Canberra itself has much to offer in its national attractions, sports activities, and sightseeing, and is easily accessible by bike paths as well as public transport.

UNSW@ADFA offers undergraduate courses leading to the University's degrees of Bachelor of Arts, Bachelor of Business, Bachelor of Science, Bachelor of Engineering, and Bachelor of Technology, and opportunities for graduate study and research leading to higher degrees, diplomas and certificates.

Undergraduate Studies
The undergraduate students are officer cadets of the Royal Australian Navy, Australian Regular Army, and Royal Australian Air Force, who are in residence at the Academy, and certain other members of the Australian Defence Force. In addition to their academic studies, officer cadets undertake programs of military training at the Academy and at Service training establishments. Registration for higher degrees is available to both military and civilian applicants.

Undergraduate entry to the Academy as an officer cadet is by selection. Applications are invited from young men and women who are seeking careers as officers in the Australian Defence Force, who have appropriate educational qualifications and meet certain physical and personal standards.

Postgraduate Studies
Postgraduate coursework programs are offered in Arts (History, Politics and English), Science (Information Technology and Operations Research and Statistics), Defence Studies, Management and Engineering Science. Research degrees are offered across 5 Schools in the Humanities and Social Sciences, Sciences, and Engineering. Postgraduate studies are taken by people from the public and private sectors as well as Defence personnel.

Many postgraduate courses are available via distance education or in some form of flexible delivery. UNSW@ADFA postgraduates have access to the usual range of postgraduate scholarships and the considerable advantages of a well-funded institution and very able academics.
