Faculty Electives

For Undergraduate Students

faculty
The Faculty offers a broad range of over 100 elective courses that may be selected as part of any of the undergraduate programs. They are also generally available to all students in the University, subject to appropriate prerequisite knowledge. These may be identified in the course descriptions at the end of this Handbook as they all have course codes in the form BENVXXXX. These courses are generally offered in only one session each year and students are advised to check availability and timetabling for these electives on the Faculty website (www.fbe.unsw.edu.au).

In addition, students undertaking programs which require the study of open electives may select courses associated with programs in another faculty or select FBE electives. Details of these options are explained on the website.

The University's basic requirements are the same for students in all single degree programs. Students must satisfactorily complete a minimum of 12 units of credit in General Education courses or their equivalent (unless entitled to exemption as prescribed in the University rules). Combined degrees offered with another faculty are deemed to satisfy this requirement within the prescribed program. Students must undertake 56 hours of study which examine the purposes and consequences of their university education and which fosters socially, ethically and professionally responsible behaviour. Most programs in the Faculty of the Built Environment fulfill this requirement as part of the normal program curriculum. However, in the case of both the BBCM and BSc(Arch) programs, students are required to take BENV1382 Social Responsibility and Professional Ethics in part fulfillment of this requirement.

Students enrolled in FBE programs are permitted to do only 3uoc in General Education from FBE options, and a maximum of two courses (6 uoc) from any other faculty.
