A Message from the Dean

For Undergraduate Students

Scientia building

A warm welcome to the Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences at the University of New South Wales. We believe you will find your studies with us exciting, challenging and rewarding.

The Faculty offers single and combined degrees providing breadth of choice as well as a well structured and focused undergraduate learning and research experience. Many students undertake an additional Honours year, and while the majority proceeds directly into employment in a wide variety of fields, others continue their studies and undertake a higher degree by coursework or research. You can select from disciplinary and interdisciplinary studies in the Bachelor of Arts program as well as from professional degree programs.

Our graduates are highly valued and are found both nationally and internationally in high-level positions in fields as diverse as international and local commerce and business, education, social work, corporate affairs, public health and community service, media and public relations. Many of our graduates are now renowned writers, creative artists, performers and film-makers.

International studies is both a teaching and research strength within the Faculty. Most programs have an international component. Students may undertake language study of varying periods as part of their degree and are encouraged to undertake a period of international exchange. Arrangements for these exchanges are largely managed by the University's International Exchange office.

Our internship program is growing rapidly, with increasing numbers of students undertaking periods of attachment outside the University as part of their degrees. These arrangements are made by our Internship Officer and aim to match student interest with potential employers, and to give students experience of everyday life in their field of choice.

Students have the opportunity to engage with academic staff recognised in their fields for their expertise, research and publishing. There is a strong Learning and Teaching program in the Faculty building high quality tertiary teaching skills amongst teaching staff.

The Faculty fosters friendly and cooperative relations between staff and students. Advice is readily available throughout the year from our Faculty Office on the ground floor of the Morven Brown building, where specialised support is available for student enquiries of all kinds. For more specialised academic assistance all lecturing staff have regular hours available for consultation, and tutors and administrative staff will always make time to answer questions or make suggestions.

Students are represented on the Faculty's main decision-making body, the Faculty Academic Board, and provide advice and feedback to many of the Faculty committees. Students are also welcome to make suggestions and of course are asked to respond regularly to formal feedback on their courses, programs and teachers at the end of each session. The Associate Dean (Education) is also available to receive written comments and suggestions at any time from students.

The Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences aims to make your period of study with us highly rewarding both personally and professionally. We welcome you to join the other fine students who make work and study a challenge and a pleasure.
