It is my pleasure to welcome you to the Faculty of Medicine at the University of New South Wales. I would like to focus on who we are and what we stand for. An underlying principle at UNSW, and especially in the Faculty of Medicine, is the link between teaching and research. Our staff tell us that they want to work with us because they have the opportunity to pursue their research and to teach. In addition, many of our staff are doctors and other healthcare professionals who make major contributions to the delivery of clinical care, particularly in the public hospital system. As well as our full-time salaried staff, more than a thousand doctors attached to hospitals and working in the communities have unpaid conjoint appointments with us and make enormous contributions to teaching and research. UNSW Medicine has a strong presence at the Kensington campus. In addition, staff and students are based in teaching hospitals in Sydney, Wollongong and regional and rural areas, especially Albury/Wodonga, Wagga Wagga, Coffs Harbour and Port Macquarie. The Undergraduate Program in Medicine is a central focus. We also have undergraduate programs in Health and Exercise Science, and in Medical Science. There is a diverse array of postgraduate coursework programs such as the Masters in Public Health. Postgraduate research focuses on research Masters, PhD and MD programs in all of the clinical, basic science and social science disciplines. Our students are another rich resource in the Faculty. There is a broad mix of students from many backgrounds and metropolitan, rural and international students are all represented in large numbers. Our teaching and learning methods encourage a student-centred approach and acknowledgement that our staff and our students are our two richest resources. We remain committed to a learning environment where research and teaching are closely intertwined and where we have close relationships with the healthcare system. Once again, welcome to the Faculty of Medicine. I hope that you will find the information that you need by browsing through these pages. Should you wish to ask a more specific question, do not hesitate to come into the Faculty Office or call on 9385-8765.
