Linguistics

Description

Linguistics is the scientific study of language. Understanding how language works is the best way to improve one’s ability to learn other languages, to enhance one’s linguistic repertoire and expression, and to develop an appreciation of linguistic and cultural diversity. This program provides the foundations for an understanding of the organisation, functions and relationship of language to the individual mind and to the society as a whole. The theories, concepts and applications are relevant to all human languages in the world.

What You'll Study

Our courses in Linguistics focus on the traditional core areas of language structure including: the sound system (phonetics and phonology), grammar (morphology and syntax) and meaning (semantics and pragmatics). Additionally we examine how contemporary linguists deal with issues of language acquisition and use, computational applications of linguistics and intercultural communication. You can also expand your knowledge by studying linguistic diversity in urban settings as well as in Indigenous contexts and critically evaluate relevant policies that impact multilingual and multicultural communities.
