Program Description

With this dual degree program, students can add a Science program to the standard, professionally accredited BSc in Computer Science program offered by the School of Computer Science and Engineering. All Science majors within program 3970 are available.

Students who meet the entry requirements for the BSc in Computer Science program 3778 and for the Bachelor of Science program 3970 may apply to enter the combined Bachelor of Science Bachelor of Science (Computer Science) program.

Students should schedule the Science and Computer Science components to suit their preferences while meeting constraints of timetables and prerequisites. The Science Faculty section in this Handbook describes the Science options and the School of Computer Science and Engineering Student Office can supply sample programs indicating what previous students have arranged.

In addition to the BSc in Computer Science program 3778, students must complete a minimum of 96 units of credit in Science courses, including a major sequence in an approved area. The Science office must approve the Science component while the School of Computer Science and Engineering will approve the final program and schedule.

The award of Honours in either the Science or the Computer Science program requires at least one further year of study.

Students wishing to gain a degree at Honours level can apply for a separate Honours degree (4500 or 4515). These each require one further year of study and typically require an overall WAM (weighted average mark) of at least 65%. See handbook pages of program program 4500 and program 4515 for further details. Further details are listed below under Honours.

Program Objectives and Graduate Attributes

Please contact the School of Computer Science and Engineering for information on the Program Objectives and Learning Outcomes.

Program Structure

Requirements for the Bachelor of Science in dual degree mode.

When taken as part of a dual degree, a Bachelor of Science is comprised of 96 units of credit which includes:
  • An approved major from the Bachelor of Science program; and
  • Science elective courses.
Requirements for the Bachelor of Science (Computer Science) in dual degree mode are as follows:
The 96 units of credit for the BSc component consists of all of the requirements for the Bachelor of Science (Computer Science) except for the 12 units of credit General Education requirement and 36 units of free electives.

Students must complete one of the COMP major streams listed in the specialisation section.

General Education Requirements

This program is a combined degree and no longer has any General Education requirements.

Honours

4500 Science (Honours)

Students interested in pursuing Honours in Science, may apply for admission to the 4500 Bachelor of Science (Honours) program. Students may commence this Honours program only when they have completed the requirements for the equivalent of a single degree (ie where a Science student in a dual degree would like to commence Honours they must have completed at least the 96 UOC Science core degree plus 48 units of credit for the other degree such that a total of 144 UOC has been completed). For more information about Honours in Science, please see 4500 Bachelor of Science (Honours).

4515 Bachelor of Science Honours (Computer Science)

Computer Science Honours takes one year full-time or two years of part-time study.

Students are expected to have attained an average mark of 65 (according to New South Student calculations) to qualify for entry to the Honours year. Students who do not meet this expectation may be admitted in special circumstances. Students who have graduated with a three-year computer science degree from UNSW or another university can apply for admission to Honours.

Academic Rules

Academic rules relating to the Bachelor of Science in concurrent mode are as follows:
  1. Students must complete a minimum of 96 units of credit for the Bachelor of Science;
  2. Students must complete at least one approved Bachelor of Science major, and this must be declared before enrolling in Level II courses (see the 3970 Bachelor of Science program page for a list of approved majors). Information about how to declare a major can be found on the Science Student Centre website.
  3. Students may choose to complete an optional minor using their Science electives (see above for list of approved minors).Students cannot complete a minor with the same name as their nominated major, and Level II and III courses cannot be double-counted between majors and minors. More than one minor may be completed subject to the limit on double-counting. Students must declare their minor(s) before their final semester.
  4. In addition to the courses required for a student's chosen major, students must take 'science' courses so that the major plus 'science' courses total 96 units of credit. Details of what courses constitute 'science' courses can be found in Table 1 on the 3970 Bachelor of Science program page. For students enrolled in 3983 Science / Computer Science, "COMP" courses cannot be counted as ‘Science’ courses to fulfill this requirement.;
  5. Students must complete at least 24 units of credit of Level I science courses;
  6. No student may commence Level II courses until 30 units of credit of Level I courses have been successfully completed. (This is 30 units of credit of courses taken towards the entire dual degree and not just courses for the Science component);
  7. Students may commence Level III courses upon successful completion of 72 units of credit. (This is 72 units of credit of courses taken towards the entire dual degree and not just courses for the Science component); Students wishing to complete a double major in the Bachelor of Science when taken as part of a dual degree with another degree program at UNSW should be aware that it will be very difficult to complete two majors within 96 units of credit. Therefore where a dual degree student would like to undertake a double major, they should be aware that it may involve extra time and cost to complete, and may have visa implications for international students.
