Program Description

The Bachelor of Media Arts Honours (BMA Hons) is the equivalent of four years full-time study, designed to meet industry demand for creative practitioners and content developers who possess multiple skills and breadth of knowledge in media arts including video making, sound, web design, digital imaging, 3D modelling, animation, and critical and creative thinking within the domain of digital media. The BMA (Hons) offers students strong fundamentals combined with creative development and flexibility to explore a digital media major, and undertake a significant research project and industry experience internship in their final year.

Program Objectives and Graduate Attributes

On successful completion of the BMA (Hons) graduates will be able to:
  • employ conceptual understanding and skills critical to interdisciplinary media arts practice
  • undertake and publish research, employing media arts and relevant methodologies
  • reflect critically on the social, cultural and environmental contexts of their practice
  • work independently and collaboratively, communicate their work to a variety of audiences, and be professional and innovative in a range of creative contexts
  • be engaged with social and global perspectives through their practice
Graduates will be key players in the arts, digital media, entertainment and internet-based media with strengths in creative design and technical innovation.

Program Structure

The degree of Bachelor of Media Arts is awarded as a Honours degree at the completion of four years full-time study.

The BMA (Hons) consists of a Media Arts core that provides a depth of engagement with Media Arts studies (144 UOC) and an Elective and General Education component (48 UOC) that provides breadth of experience.

Year 1

Students must complete the following core courses:

Year 2

Students must complete the following core courses:
  • Media Arts Studios (12 UOC)
  • Media Arts or Design or Fine Arts Studios (12 UOC)
  • Contextual Studies (12 UOC)
The breadth component of Year 2:
  • General Education (6 UOC)
  • Elective (6 UOC)
Year 3

General Education Requirements

General Education course is any UNSW course not offered by UNSW Art & Design in which the student is able to enrol.

Honours

Honours is awarded on the basis of meritorious performance across the whole program, and performance in the Honours Research Projects.

Students will be considered for the award of honours according to the following scale, which includes the average of the marks from the two Honours Research Project courses and the Weighted Average Marks from all courses which contribute to the program:
  • Honours Class 1: If WAM of at least 75.0 and Honours Research Project average of at least 85
  • Honours Class 2 Division 1: WAM of at least 70.0 and Project mark of at least 75
  • Honours Class 2 Division 2: WAM of at least 65.0 and Project mark of at least 65
  • Honours Class 3: WAM of at least 50.0 and Project mark of at least 50
All Honours Research Project assessments will be marked by two independent examiners.

Academic Rules

Complete 192 UOC consisting of:
  • Media Arts core (144 UOC)
  • Electives (36 UOC)
  • General Education (12 UOC)
Complete at least 30 UOC of Level I courses before enrolling in Level II or Level III courses
