Program Description
The Bachelor of Fine Arts (Honours) [BFA (Hons)] is the equivalent of four years full-time study, designed for those who wish to involve themselves as practitioners in the visual arts or related fields by providing rigorous and demanding studies at tertiary level from a wide range of approaches and disciplines within the visual arts.

The BFA (Hons) offers students strong fundamentals combined with flexibility to explore various media through practice and experimentation, and undertake a significant research project and opportunities to engage with the arts world in their final year.

Program Objectives and Graduate Attributes
On successful completion of the BFA (Hons) graduates will be able to:
  • demonstrate an understanding of the principles, concepts and skills relevant to art practice within a contemporary context
  • undertake focused research engaging with a range of practice-based fine art methodologies
  • locate and critique the framework of contemporary fine art practice, by reflecting on social, cultural and environmental contexts
  • communicate their practice and research, to work independently and collaboratively, and be adept at undertaking tasks innovatively in a professional context
  • perform at an international level, contributing to contemporary culture and fine art practice
Fine Arts (Hons) graduates will have the skills to become exhibiting artists as well as play important roles within the creative industries more broadly.

Program Structure
The degree of Bachelor of Fine Arts (Honours) is awarded as an Honours degree at the completion of four years full-time study, which includes a research and internship component.

The BFA (Hons) consists of a Fine Arts core that provides a depth of engagement with Fine Art studies (144 UOC) and an Elective and General Education component (48 UOC) that provides breadth of experience.

  • Fine Arts, Design or Media Studios (12 UOC)

Year 3

Students must complete the following core courses:
  • Fine Arts Studios (12 UOC)
  • Fine Arts, Design or Media Arts Studios (12 UOC)

Contextual Studies

Students must complete 12 UOC in Contextual Studies, normally in their 2nd year, from approved courses (as listed below):

General Education Requirements
General Education course is any UNSW course not offered by UNSW Art & Design in which the student is able to enrol.

Honours
Honours is awarded on the basis of meritorious performance across the whole program, and performance in the Honours Research Projects.

Students will be considered for the award of honours according to the following scale, which includes the average of the marks from the two Honours Research Project courses and the marks from all courses which contribute to the program.
  1. Honours Class 1: If WAM of at least 75.0 and Honours Research Project average of at least 85
  2. Honours Class 2 Division 1: WAM of at least 70.0 and Project average of at least 75
  3. Honours Class 2 Division 2: WAM of at least 65.0 and Project average of at least 65
  4. Honours Class 3: WAM of at least 50.0 and Project average of at least 50
The Honours Research Projects will be independently marked by two markers.

Students who have completed 144 UOC and the requirements of 4800 Bachelor of Fine Arts, may seek approval to transfer to the 4800 Bachelor of Fine Arts program and graduate with that award.

Academic Rules
Complete 192 UOC consisting of:
  • Fine Arts core (144 UOC) - Depth component
  • Electives (36 UOC) - Breadth component
  • General Education (12 UOC)
Complete at least 30 UOC of Level I courses before enrolling in Level II or Level III courses

The Academic Rules for the BFA and the online enrolment facility provide students with a wide range of course choices. The online enrolment facility checks that students meet the enrolment requirements for individual courses but not that a course complies with Program Rules. Students are responsible for ensuring they are enrolling in accordance with the Academic Rules outlined above. Students should not assume that because they have enrolled in a course online that the course is automatically credited to their degree program.
