The Bachelor of Commerce (Co-op) (Honours) is a highly valued and unique business qualification. It provides high-achieving students with a strong, 4-year academic program, integrated with:

(i) Fully assessable industry placement experiences that enable students to work with some of Australia's leading employers.
(ii) Research training via advanced disciplinary and methodology courses and a thesis.

The BCom (Co-op) (Honours) combines the requirements of the degree with 18 months of coordinated industry placement at three different sponsoring organisations. The industry placement extends outside university semesters.

A scholarship is payable from funds donated by the sponsoring organisations, and entry to the program is limited to students awarded a scholarship through the BCom (Co-op) (Honours) selection procedures administered by UNSW Co-op Program Office. Program Structure

Studies leading to the award of the BCom (Co-op) (Honours) normally consist of 192 UOC (or 32 courses) to be completed over 4 academic years.

UOC will consist of:
  • Compulsory core courses
  • Flexible core courses
  • Business Co-op Honours major
  • Industry Placement courses
  • General Education courses
  • Business School electives
Compulsory core courses account for 24 UOC (4 courses)
Flexible core courses account for 24 UOC (4 courses). Students should choose four courses from the following list:

Business Co-op Honours Major
Students complete a co-op honours major (96 UOC) in the disciplinary area of their Co-op scholarship. (Note: Currently Finance is the only major offered in this program.)
The co-op honours major must contain at least 18 UOC at level 3 and 48 UOC at level 4. (Note that the 96 UOC includes the first disciplinary course(s) in the Core (Compulsory or Flexible). This means that, for the majority of majors, students will complete 90 UOC in specified disciplinary courses outside the first year core.)

The 48 UOC of courses at level 4 relates to the Honours, or research training component of this degree. Some disciplines may also include additional research training in lower level courses (e.g. level 2 or 3). The level 4 courses will include 24 UOC of advanced disciplinary and research training courses and a 24 UOC thesis.

On satisfactory completion of the requirements of this program, students will be awarded a class of honours. The class will be dependent on the weighted average mark (WAM) of the level 4 courses.
  • Class 1: WAM of 85 and over
  • Class 2(1): WAM of 75 to less than 85
  • Class 2(2): WAM of 65 to less than 75
  • Class 3: WAM of 50 to less than 65
For specific details of all courses, and examination of the thesis, please refer to the relevant discipline plan. (Refer Table A)

Industry Placement courses account for 36 UOC. These courses are in addition to the requirements of the Co-op Honours Major. Students complete 3 industry placement courses within the area of their co-op scholarship, with each course worth 12 UOC.

The first industry placement course in Finance is:
Business School Electives may account for up 12 UOC (2 courses). The exact UOC will be dependent of the area of student's major. Sufficient Business School electives need to be taken to ensure students complete a minimum of 180 UOC of Business School courses (including first year core, business co-op honours major, and industry placement courses). When selecting courses students need to be mindful of the maximum Level 1 requirement for this program (72 UOC, excluding GE courses).

University Medal
A student may be nominated for a University Medal in line with the University Medal Policy and University Medal Procedure.

For further information about General Education Requirements please refer to the UNSW Online Handbook.
Please note that students enrolled in programs within the Business School cannot take General Education courses offered by the Business School (i.e. courses with a GENC code). These restrictions also apply to the following courses:
